situation: there is a fire in a house next door to Mr. Garcin; a huge fire that caught Mr. Garcin's house on fire and his wife is in his house that is on fire now and she needs to be saved the neighbor needs to be saved to what will he do?
goes into his house and save his journalism stuff so he can write about the fire, then saves the next door neighbor, then goes for his wife who was already saved by someone who is noble and kind.
One peaceful night on the street of Maroon at the house of Mr. Garcin and his wife, while Mr. Garcin was in his study writing an article about the recent election on how it was rigged he started to smell something funny and gross, like the spell of spoke, burnt rubber, and gas. So curiously he got up and went out front door, where he saw that the neighbors house was on fire and that his house was on fire also, so quickly he ran back into his study and got all of his journalism equipment and ran back outside, went next door, broke down the door, running through the flames to the yelling young woman holding her five month old son trapped in a room that will soon be engulfed by the flames. Just in time Mr. Garcin breaks in saving the young mother and her baby, got her out of the burning house, and by this time the fireman, ambulance, and police have finally made it, Mr.Garcin then realized that he forgot all about his wife and just when he was about to go in and save her, he sees a fireman about his age come out of his burning house holding his unconscious wife going straight to the paramedic to get better and conscious. Mr. Garcin just figures that his wife will be okay and starts interviewing everyone until the fireman that saved his wife comes over and tells him that his wife is gravely injured and may not make it but they are going to send her to the hospital to see what they can do to save her, he then feels guilty about not saving her first and then continues to write the article on the fire.
In "No Exit", Sartre made Mr. Garcin an arrogant, selfish person that despised his wife but after he we died and went to hell he felt guilty about his wife and how he treated her. The irony in the character is funny, because when he dies is when he realized he treated his wife so horribly. The character, Mr. Garcin reacted the way he did in that situation because its his wife that he cares nothing about until its to late, and that he would put his job in front of anything and anyone and that's what killed him in "No Exit". From "The Allegor of the Cave" the slave was trying to defeat the shadows and go by a hole new set of rules to break free of the cave and go outside and see the unknown world, and in a way that's what Mr.Garcin was doing when he was alive, he fought for what he believed in and died for the same cause. They both follow what they believe in.
